Yesterday, September 7th, 2017, Equifax (EFX) announced a data breach of 143 million American consumers whose sensitive personal information was exposed. Please read a release from Equifax to see what you can do for yourself and your customers as well as determine if you or your customers are affected by this indecent.

From Equifax:

Situation
  • Equifax has experienced a cyber security incident.
  • The intrusion occurred in mid-May to July. 
  • Equifax discovered the unauthorized access on July 29 of this year and acted immediately to stop the intrusion.
  • There is no evidence of unauthorized activity on the core credit reporting databases.
  • This incident impacts around 143 million consumers.
  • Consumer’s info exposed includes: names, addresses, birth dates, social security numbers and "in some cases" driver’s license numbers. (Plus credit card numbers  for 209,000 US consumers and dispute forms for 182,000 US consumers)
 Equifax’s Actions
  • Equifax promptly engaged a leading, independent cybersecurity firm to respond to the intrusion and investigate the situation. They will also provide recommendations on steps that can be taken to help prevent this type of incident from happening again.
  • The incident is currently contained.
  • While Equifax’s investigation is substantially complete, it remains ongoing and is expected to be completed in the coming weeks.    
  • Law enforcement and other related authorities are actively involved in this incident.
  • Equifax is alerting customers whose information was included in the breach via mail.
  • Equifax is offering every US consumer a package of identity theft protection and credit file monitoring at no cost.
  • Equifax has dedicated a new website with more info at: https://www.equifaxsecurity2017.com/
 Potential Impact and any actions you need to take
  • No dealer data was compromised.
  • No action is needed from dealerships at this time. 
  • If there are questions, please advise consumers to Equifax’s dedicated website and inform them that free identity theft protection is being made available to everyone by Equifax.
